       Lancé en 2006, le DVD ( digital versatile disc) haute définition a une capacité dix fois supérieure au DVD classique. Faute d’un accord entre les parties, il est régi par deux normes concurrentes: la norme Blu-Ray, promue par Sony, et la norme HD DVD (high definition DVD), promue par Toshiba. En janvier 2007, des fabricants commercialisent des lecteurs de DVD bi-format, compatibles Blu-Ray et HD DVD. Le premier lecteur hybride est lancé par LG Electronics aux Etats-Unis. A la même date, les studios Warner annoncent le lancement d’un DVD haute définition bi-format, le THD (total high definition), gravé aux normes Blu-Ray et HD DVD, une sur chaque face. En février 2007, on parle du lancement prochain du HVD (holographic versatile disc), un DVD holographique destiné à une clientèle de professionnels.

       Apparu en 1996, le DVD (digital versatile disc) fait suite au CD (compact disc) pour stocker texte, image et son sur un support optique. Le DVD remplace progressivement le CD-Rom et les cassettes vidéo, vu sa capacité de stockage très supérieure, qui va de 4,3 gigaoctets (pour un DVD sur un seul côté et à un seul niveau) à 17 gigaoctets. Un film de deux heures peut être stocké sur une face de DVD. Les différentes versions de DVD sont le le DVD-R (recordable: enregistrable), le DVD-RW (rewritable: réinscriptible), le DVD-Rom (qui remplace progressivement le CD-Rom) et le DVD-vidéo. En 2001, les constructeurs commencent à intégrer des lecteurs et graveurs de DVD dans les modèles en série. La promotion du format DVD est assurée par le DVD Forum, un consortium international de fabricants de matériels et logiciels fondé en 1995. Le DVD haute définition apparaît en 2006 (voir la notice suivante).

       La norme HD DVD (high definition digital versatile disc) est une norme de DVD haute définition, qui permet de proposer une image et un son de très grande qualité. Les deux normes concurrentes du marché sont la norme HD DVD, défendue par Toshiba, et la norme Blu-Ray, défendue par Sony. Pas de norme commune donc, faute d’un accord entre les parties. Les premiers DVD nouvelle génération sont lancés en 2007. Outre Toshiba, la norme HD DVD est utilisée par Microsoft, LG, NEC et RCA. Des DVD haute définition bi-format et des lecteurs de DVD bi-format sont lancés en 2007.

       Le moteur de recherche Yahoo! lance sa plateforme Yahoo! Music en août 2005. En 2005 et 2006, de plus en plus de téléphones portables et smartphones intègrent un baladeur de musique. On compte 335 plateformes de téléchargement légal en 2005, et 498 plateformes en 2006. La musique téléchargée représente 6% du marché de la musique (CD, cassettes, DVD, vinyles, téléchargements) en 2005 et 10% en 2006. D’après les analystes, le marché de la musique en ligne devrait véritablement décoller en 2007. En janvier 2007, Apple annonce le lancement prochain du iPhone, un téléphone portable multifonctions comprenant un iPod intégré. A la même date, la plateforme VirginMega met en vente 200.000 morceaux au format MP3 sans DRM (digital rights management), pour favoriser la vente de la musique en ligne. La Fnac fait de même sur sa plateforme FnacMusic, avec 150.000 morceaux sans DRM. En mai 2007, Amazon annonce son intention d’ouvrir une plateforme de musique sans DRM dans le courant de l’année. EMI Music passe des partenariats avec VirginMega (effectif à la mi-mai 2007), Apple (accord en mars 2007, effectif fin mai 2007), Amazon (accord en mai 2007, effectif plus tard) et diverses plateformes scandinaves pour la distribution de son catalogue sans DRM au prix de 1,29 euros le morceau (au lieu de 0,99 euros avec DRM). Les téléchargements de musique en ligne pourraient représenter 25% du marché de la musique en 2010.
